ECB Online Scoring Module This course is designed to give people new to scoring the knowledge and confidence to have a go at scoring in cricket. No prior experience of scoring is required before attending the course. Whether you plan to support junior softball cricket or a hard ball game, this course will cover the following topics: •Understanding the role of the Scorer •Recognise umpire signals and what they mean for scoring •Gain an understanding of both paper and electronic scoring •Understand how to end the game and identify results correctly •Have an awareness of safeguarding responsibilities whilst scoring The course is all completed online and can be completed all in one go or broken up into small bitesize amounts that suit your needs and schedule. To gain your certificate, you must complete all of the online learning. There is no cost for this course and all scorers will be offered free membership to join the Association of Cricket Officials via the online learning platform on completion. You must be 14 or over to register for this course, if under 18 parental permission must be obtained before you proceed. The Protected Area
The protected area or danger area is the central portion of the pitch – a rectangle running down the middle of the pitch, two feet wide, and beginning five feet from each popping crease. Under the Laws of Cricket, a bowler must avoid running on this area during their follow-through after delivering the ball.

Extreme Heat Conditions You must cancel the match if: o A RED weather warning is in place, OR o The forecast maximum temperature is 33°C or above (checked 24 hours before the match or by 1pm the day prior). This is a non-negotiable health and safety decision, and no team agreement is required. Adjustments for high heat conditions (28–32°C): Where no RED warning applies but temperatures are forecast between 28°C and 32°C, you must ensure: o The match is reduced to a maximum of 40 overs o Drinks breaks are taken every 10 overs o Further reduction in overs is permitted only if both teams agree In-match temperature monitoring: You are responsible for monitoring conditions during play. o If temperatures reach 33°C, you must suspend play immediately o Play may only resume once temperatures fall to a safe level If play cannot resume: If the match cannot be completed following a suspension: o Apply standard interruption rules (e.g. abandonment or result via DLS) All decisions must be based on: o The Met Office forecast (pre-match) o The Met Office Weather App (during the match)

New ECB Recreational Cricket Safety Guidelines for 2025
The ECB have issued new safety guidelines which are in force from the 2025 season onwards. These Recreational Cricket Safety Guidelines (“Guidelines”) have been developed by the ECB’s Science & Medicine and Recreational Game departments in order to enhance the safety of everyone involved in Recreational Cricket in England and Wales. They accompany, and should be read alongside, the ECB’s Recreational Cricket Safety Regulations. These Guidelines apply to all cricket activity within a Club, including training activities, matches and net practices for players participating in Junior Cricket and/or Open Age Cricket. Although the principles and statements contained in these Guidelines are recommendations only, the ECB would strongly encourage all participants to observe them. Defined terms used throughout this document have the same meaning as is given to those terms in the Recreational Cricket Safety Regulations.
